Granholm-Cherry to deliver results in 2009: Economists predict 108,000 more jobs killed

Fitting that these sort of numbers dropped after the Democrats in Congress removed Michigan Representative John Dingell from his post on the House Energy and Commerce Committee in favor of big-government California radical Henry Waxman.

Forget about the bailout for a minute.  Imagine that the Big 3 weren't flying their execs into DC on private jets and begging for twenty-five billion dollars.  Imagine the UAW wasn't insisting they were done with concessions and wouldn't do anything with wages or benefits.   Imagine Detroit was in good enough shape that they could at least continue with their miserable status quo.

In THAT environment we get this news from University of Michigan economists... that nation's worst 9.3% unemployment rate is about to hit double-digits and it won't be coming back to earth for YEARS (if then).  The Ivory Tower:

The economists are predicting the state will shed 81,000 jobs this year, 108,000 in 2009 and 24,000 in 2010. Only in 2011 is modest job growth expected to occur.

But the new positions, mostly in the service industry, will pay lower wages than the manufacturing jobs that are disappearing. That's a key reason why Michigan's per-capita income, once one of the best in the nation, is falling.

When asked about the forecast Friday, Gov. Jennifer Granholm called it troubling and said it shows why her administration is working to diversify the economy. She was hopeful that her trade mission this past week to Israel and Jordan -- where she met with 130 companies -- would generate business investments in Michigan.

Cue the record scratching sound effect.  Come again, Madame Governor?  This is why you're working to diversify the economy?  What is it the kids are typing these days... oh yeah... WTF?!  RESULTS, woman, RESULTS!  Where are they?  Besides the unemployment line.

    Read on...

Interesting side note, those 130 companies she claims to have met with during her aborted vacation in the Middle East?  They've made approximately ZERO commitments and have promised somewhere between ZERO and ZERO new jobs here in Michigan.  Glad the taxpayers ponied up the cash to send her and her "team" on that particular site-seeing trip.

Of course, it could have been worse.  We could have been on the hook for a  few extra nights in hotel and rental car fees if she hadn't cut that trip short to hurry back to Washington DC to make sure her cabinet appointment wasn't in danger... errrrrrrr...to lobby Congress to give the UAW free money.  Now she and John Cherry are back in Lansing trying to figure out how to solve what could wind up being a nearly $1,000,000,000 budget deficit this fiscal year alone here in Michigan.  She's going to have to make some cuts and she has to start massaging the press to make sure no one reminds Michigan voters that the Democrats $1.5 billion in new taxes last year failed miserably to solve the state's budget problems.

    According to the Detroit News:

The governor did not specify where the ax will fall this time, but said she intends to avoid reductions in school aid and health care for needy seniors, the disabled and children.

"Obviously, we want to protect public school funding as much as possible," Granholm said. "I know we will be able to carry forward a good amount of money (from the current budget year) and a K-12 (midyear cut) is not necessarily going to be needed."

That's code, boys and girls, for "I'm going to let criminals out of jail early and fire corrections officers."  Heck, she might even close a jail or two while she's at it.  That'd save some cash.

One item you can expect won't be on her cut-list, that Office of the First Gentleman.  Apparently there's some sort of space-time paradox and physicists worry that if that worthless government money pit were cut from the budget the very fabric of the universe might be torn asunder and we could all be sucked into an interdimensional black hole.

If you think about it in those terms it seems A-OK to waste $350,000 of the taxpayers money every year to help her hubby play a poor-man's Stuart Smiley.  Besides, if there's a more rational explanation for that office I haven't been able to find it.

The economists are predicting the state will shed 81,000 jobs this year, 108,000 in 2009 and 24,000 in 2010.
The state has lost 74,000 jobs already in the first ten months of the year. What with the cuts being announced from the big three and their suppliers daily, not to mention Herman Miller and other Michigan companies I believe the experts are understating the totals. This month alone Dana Corp closed ten plants and laid off 5000 workers. Herman Miller announced 450 jobs to be eliminated and more to follow if things don't improve. Steelcase has also laid off workers with more to come. From what I can tell since Nov.1st we have seen the car companies shed about 30,000 jobs and they don't appear to be done yet.So we can add roughly another 45,500 to that 74,000 and we see that once again Jenny No Jobs and her goverment version of the Detroit Lions have once again lost jobs in the six digits. To date and we have two months of job loss reports to come we have a net loss of 109,450. Probably higher.
Is there any doubt that Jenny No Jobs is the most feckless, incompetent and corrupt Governor in the history of this state? But I guess the voters have opted to either accept their fate or be blown away to other states by the ill wind of poverty and economic disaster that blew in with Granholm and her storm of stupidity.
Cuts in spending? What about the second most worthless office that Sister Jennifer Granholm of the Holy Sisters of Money Laundering created? The Office of State Surgeon General. That needs to go. We don't need to spend millions of dollars for some pencil neck idgit to tell us we are to fat, out of shape, smoke to much and drink to much. We have the federal health Nazi's for that. What would that save Jenny baby? Another six million or more.

Finally, everyone knows what she was talking about.  It was jobs!  Jobs will be "blown away!"

Unfortunately, most of the folks in our beautiful state won't be able to connect those dots.

I don't want to be forced to leave for economic reasons.  I like it here.  This is my home.  And I may be biased, but it's the most beautiful state in the union, with great people to boot!

And just think ... "the One" is going to bring all this to the entire country!

I've been a stockbroker, a banker, and an entrepreneur.  I've always been able to see the light at the end of the tunnel, so I always adjusted and never worried.

For the first time in my life ... I'm not just worried ... I'm scared.

... if there's a more rational explanation for that office I haven't been able to find it.

Nope!  You gave a completely logical and reasonable explanation.
