BREAKING: Governor and Schauer reject income tax hike... because it's not BIG ENOUGH!

Literally just hung up the phone with Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop's office.

Things are moving hot and heavy right now at the Capitol and there is a MAJOR development.  Unfortunately, it's just one more illustration that Michigan Democrats are hell-bent (pardon my french) on strapping the burden of a monster sized tax hike on struggling Michigan families.

With the Governor pledging to veto the Senate's continuation budget and calling again and again for cuts, reforms and "increased revenues" Bishop went to her office and the Senate Dems with this:

A package of spending cuts and reforms in excess of $1 BILLION.

In exchange the Senate would allow a vote on an income tax hike to move the rate from 3.9% to 4.3%.  By contrast, the current tax-hike before the House (since Friday) would raise the rate to 4.6%.

That comes out to about a $660 million tax hike.

Cuts, reforms, tax hikes.  The three pieces the governor wanted.  And I don't need to tell anyone here how unpopular Bishop will be with a lot of folks for even allowing a vote on an income tax hike.  Point being, he made a HUGE offer at HUGE personal risk to give the governor what she's demanding, to "put Michigan first" and to work out a compromise.

Granholm's reaction? The Senate Dems?   NO THANKS.  They turned him down flat.  She is refusing to consider cuts and reforms anywhere in excess of $300 million and is demanding a massive income tax hike of $1.2 BILLION (again, the bill on the board without Democrat support since Friday) in addition to somewhere in the neighborhood of $300-$500 MILLION in the form of a sales tax on services.

Granholm and the Senate Dems turned down "additional revenues" because they just plain wouldn't raise our taxes enough.  Apparently she's angling for a government shutdown despite her rhetoric.

Looks like the Democrats will stop at nothing to put as many Michigan families as possible out of work.

At least this will finally put to rest any remaining notion that Granholm, Schauer and their ilk are even semi-serious about changing the way government does business.

Hold on to your wallets, ladies and gentlemen.  The Michigan Democrats are coming and they want everything you've got.

Governor Granholm, theatrics, saying one thing and doing another?

I'm waiting, still waiting, even waiting on a roof top during a thunderstorm with a large metal rod pointing skyward.

    Nope, I'm not shocked.

    Good grief! (none / 0) (#2)

    What depressingly unsurprising news.

As you've stated, Nick, the intentions of the governor and her fellow Dems are now crystal clear.  Anything short of the fleecing of Michigan taxpayers is unacceptable from their point of view.

The only silver lining out of this sorry mess is the incredible opportunity the Dems are handing the Republicans for next year's state House and Senate races.

Meanwhile, start re-working your personal budgets.  Before this is over, the governor and her comrades in the House and Senate will be confiscating still more of your hard-earned income.

Well, maybe not when you think about who the Senate Majority Leader is dealing with - but it's completely unacceptable.

    Completely and Totally unacceptable.

How can you possibly bargain with someone when they demand that they get their way on everything and you have to give up all your principals?  I don't think that's the way negotiations work.  In fact, I'm sure that's not how they work!

And as far as the continuation budget goes, if she won't sign it she can take the credit for criminals running loose on the streets, schools shutting down and people dying.  It'd be awesome if the Media would point out her total hypocrisy - but I'm not holding my breath.

    I must be missing something.
The Republicans compromised with a tax increase, where is the Democrat compromise?
Granholm has got to be the worst executive.............at least I hope there are none worse.

this is great cannon fodder for Walberg to use against SHifty Schauer in the Congressional race - if he can spend money like a drunken sailor in Michigan, just think how he'll spend it in DC!

I would have voted against that too (none / 0) (#7)
by Republican Michigander on Tue Sep 18, 2007 at 10:12:06 PM EST
For a different reason. No tax increase, period. Bishop made his compromise on allowing a vote. Time to play hardball, hit the airways, and start the recalls against the Matt Millen of governors, Mark Schauer, and Andy Dillon.

I'm now convinced the Governor wants a shutdown of government and believes her media machine is so powerful she can push the blame onto the R's no matter what.  Hopefully the media sees through it -- I thought we were already ahead in the substance of the media battle with the Dillon/14 implosion, but if this move by Bishop doesn't galvanize the op-ed boards and the raw outcry of average citizens against the Governor, I don't know what will.

A recall was premature (but not preparing for one, so don't misconstrue that as a criticism of Leon), but I'd say one for the Governor wouldn't be (or the 14 not doing their job, afraid of both the Governor and their constituents).  Anyone have $2.5 million to help save the people of Michigan?

I understand why the 14 are afraid.  You've got the Governor on one end, and the people and Leon on the other.  Imagine being a Dem in a swing district.

and why do Senate and House Republicans refuse to vote in support of such a plan?

...smelled a rat when Dillon himself failed to vote for his own package?

    So what's stopping Bishop (none / 0) (#12)
by NoviDemocrat on Wed Sep 19, 2007 at 09:40:15 AM EST
from putting up his plan for $1.7 billion in cuts in the Senate? He can put a proposal that includes only the cuts that he approves and I'm sure he can clear it with everyone here at RM first so you are all on the same page. Then they'll be no more excuses and spinning required on your part.

Bishop hasn't put up a vote on all cuts (none / 0) (#13)
by jackietreehorn on Wed Sep 19, 2007 at 10:00:29 AM EST
because he knows exactly what will happen when it gets to the House.  It will be stuck just like the income tax increase is.  Why confuse Dillon more.  Not to mention that if Bishop sent ove $1.7 Billion in cuts it would have the support of all the Republicans.  And don't even say that Dillon put up a vote on $1.7 Billion in cuts, because he left out all the acceptable parts of the plan Gary Olson from SFA laid out and put in all the poisonous parts.

Novi Democrat should be treated like conservatives are treated over on the liberal boards. His posts should be removed.

"And don't even say that Dillon put up a vote on $1.7 Billion in cuts, because he left out all the acceptable parts of the plan Gary Olson from SFA laid out and put in all the poisonous parts."

That's a lie. I compared the two plans and what Olson listed and what was in H-10 were almost identical. There's no truth to your claim.

    And that's a pathetic excuse (none / 0) (#15)

"Bishop hasn't put up a vote on all cuts because he knows exactly what will happen when it gets to the House.  It will be stuck just like the income tax increase is."

Where's his principles? He's not willing to put up a plan that reflects Republican principles? How gutless is that?

    Hahahaha... "gutless" (none / 0) (#16)

coming from the guy who won't even address the fact ten Democrats refuse to vote one way or the other.

To which I can say nothing but:

    Where's the plan? (none / 0) (#18)
by NoviDemocrat on Wed Sep 19, 2007 at 10:55:43 AM EST
All we've gotten from Bishop is talk. No plans and no votes. Why is it so hard from anyone on the right to put together a plan with $1.7 billion in cuts?
