...there's always more!   According to the DetNews, the Legislature will start discussing moving to a part time legislature.  When asked if she'd support it, the Governor said yes.  BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!

No, you don't get bamboo windchimes.  She'd agree to a part time legislature only if term limits are lifted.

Now I've never been a fan of term limits - those automatically occur when you have an election.  However, the fact that she wants to see an end to them makes me very nervous.

    Term limits are a joke (none / 0) (#1)

and I don't worry about anyone who opposes them.  In fact, I worry more about the sanity of those that do.  Term limits has led to nothing but employment headaches for staffers leading quality staff to leave the first chance they get and lobbyists leading the the "leaders".  A unicameral legislature would be a much better idea.  We waste a ridiculous amount of time getting bills through two houses.

    Throw the bums out (5.00 / 1) (#2)

We have to stop this "throw the bums out" mentality.  We have to stop ourselves before the logical outcome that so many would like to see occurs, that being "get elected and get thrown directly in jail."

If you believe that your state representative or state senator's only job is to vote on naming the state reptile, or fighting over the budget, then you are sorely mistaken.

When the DEQ denies you access to your property because of an endangered tree that you are not touching, or you cannot get the state benefits you are entitled to because the font you used to fill out the form is wrong, or your liquor license has been tied up for months for no reason, or treasury goofed up on some money you were counting on, just remember:

You put term limits on your representative, and now you want to limit their time in Lansing, and force them to get "real jobs".  And, in so doing, you deny them the abiilty to do their real job.  To be your advocate.

If you honestly believe they spend all their time smoking cigars and running away with your money, go follow one around for the day.

And if you don't think that is important, good luck when you run afoul of our executive departments.  Because you don't get to vote for them...

    my point is this: (2.00 / 1) (#7)

I have never supported term limits.  It is just plain bad policy.  The underlying premise is that the legislators are impossible to oust.  Now you have spouses or other relatives running for seats, some of whom have dubious qualifications at best.  However, name recognition wins seats and that seems to be how most of them are keeping seats in the family.  So my question is:  why does the Governor favor this?  Now that there is a D majority in the house, does she think the repeal of term limits will keep it that way?

I think that term limits ought to be repealed and both parties need to work together to get them reversed.  I also don't think Michigan would suffer with a part-time legislature.  "No man's life, liberty, or property are safe when the Legislature is in session".  I'm not denigrating the job that most legislators and their staff do.  However, there are a few of them up there that do nothing, or worse, do too much.
