Still No Health Care Plan from Governor Granholm
We heard about it first in Granholm's 2006 State of the State Address. We heard it again, and again, and again on the campaign trail. We heard about one more time in Granholm's 2007 State of the State Address. By April of 2007, we were going to have an innovative health care plan in place for roughly half of the state's uninsured.
But like airline passengers delayed in a terminal being told "your flight will be around shortly", we're all still waiting. I have to give a shout out to Saul and Mark Hornbeck of the Detroit News who called the governor out on this. Clearly this was another one of Granholm's "ideas" (which she seemed to have several during her re-election). But the problem for Granholm is that ideas are not plans. When Mitt Romney did not introduce this in Massachusetts until the state had already received a waiver from the feds and the necessary legislation had been introduced in the Massachusetts legislature. But not Granholm. The governor did not let little things like federal approval and legislative passage get in the way of providing yet another illusion of leadership. If she could get re-elected by saying it, she would, so she did. And now, we're left scratching our heads wondering why this wonderful "idea" has yet to come to fruition. But have no fear; the administration and Michigan Democratic Party Chairman Mark Brewer have an answer for us. According to them, it takes a long time to negotiate this with the federal government, in fact Brewer and the Department of Community Health pointed out that in Massachusetts these negotiations took 2 1/2 years. Okay............but you still didn't really explain why Granholm decided to promise everyone in the state this program would be in place by April. Since she knew that these negotiations might take 2 1/2 years. Yep, this sounds like typical election year politics to me. So for now, add this to the political scrap heap of Granholm broken promises. Along with the independent audit of state finances that never took place, the idea of consolidating the DNR and the DEQ, and of course smaller class-sizes. If it will help her get elected, she'll say it, even if she has no intention of actually getting it done, and maybe she will. My point here is she said April 2007 and the plan is not here. Had she been more realistic and said October 2007 or even April 2008, well that sounds pretty far off and probably would not have scored her as many votes. The governor says she has a plan, the Michigan Democratic Party ran a campaign ad blasting DeVos and telling us that she had a plan. But where's the plan? It looks like the "Press Release Governor" strikes again.
