No Wonder Granholm Seems So UpsetBy Republican Yankee, Section News
Another Dose of Economic Reality Shows Again that Granholm is Failing Michigan.
"We are thrilled with how this economic plan is working" - Governor Jennifer Granholm, Michigan Democratic Party Convention, August 27, 2006
If the governor still believes this is true today, than it looks like Michigan's problems are more "urgent" than even she has been claiming. Besides holding her hand out to Michigan citizens in town hall meetings, hoping they'll bail her out of a budget mess of her own making, Governor Granholm has spent most of her time continuing to promote her economic "plan". But the problem is, there isn't too much to promote outside of continued economic disaster. The Bureau of Labor Statistics released their unemployment data earlier this month showing that Michigan had lost 24,000 jobs this past January alone. Additionally, the bureau used newly available data to update their information from 2006 and as it turns out, Michigan has lost a total of 152,600 jobs since Granholm has been governor. To give you some perspective, that fills Spartan Stadium twice with people to spare. Then, in yesterday's edition of MIRS Capitol Capsule, a study that ranked states by their pro-business climate put Michigan 31st. Keep in mind this is after Governor Granholm's economic "plan" and after her much hailed 21st Century Jobs Fund. 31st. Hardly results that are reflective of Granholm's "most aggressive economic plan in the country" (By the way, Michigan has lost 105,300 jobs since she first introduced "Jobs Today, Jobs Tomorrow"). Then, if that wasn't enough, today's Detroit Free Press reports that Michigan has lost 19,549 manufacturing jobs in the past year. So I think we can all begin to see why Granholm was so "frustrated" when Senator Bishop "didn't show" at a meeting he said he wouldn't be attending. Because the source of her frustration doesn't come from Bishop, it comes from a momentous economic calamity that she can no longer hide. Granholm campaigned on improving the economy and even promised in one of her ads "no one will work harder to bring jobs to Michigan, no one". Statements like these are beyond typical political rhetoric; they are an insult to Michigan's intelligence. Granholm seems to be playing the part of a real estate agent talking up a property that is infested with termites and riddled with sinkholes. You wouldn't buy that property, and you shouldn't be buying the "plan" Granholm's been pitching for over two years that has produced results that equally as repulsive. Make no mistake about it, Michigan is bleeding to death, and as much as Granholm and the Dems try to talk these problems away, shocking doses of reality continue to put our struggle into perspective. Putting band-aids on stab wounds by giving a select handful of companies tax credits to "retain" or create 45 jobs is not going to heal or save Michigan. I guess at this point all we can hope for is that things are still salvageable by the time Granholm leaves so that someone who actually knows what they're doing can get Michigan back on the right track.
