. . . to Alex, it would be very bad form to be openly critical of the governor, since he's from the same party and Mr. Clark is running for a state party vice-chair position.

Just in case you've forgotten, there was a major dust-up in 1998 between then-Governor Engler and then-MIGOP Chair DeVos over school choice and education vouchers. Ultimately, Mrs. DeVos was forced to resign, because state party officers don't dictate policy decisions to elected officials.
