      The company I work for supplies surveying equipment and instruments for surveyors and engineers in Michigan.  In the last four years firms doing work in the Detroit area have had thousands of dollars worth of equipment stolen from their job sites or vehicles.  On several occassions the thieves immediately call our office (800 number is on a sticker on the instrument and cases) and they want to know how much they can get for these "cameras".  They think the instruments are cameras and the surveying crews are law enforcement scoping out their territory!  Surveying firms now have to hire security firms to go on jobs with them in Detroit to protect their personnel and equipment. All adds up to extra costs because of the lawlessness in the big D.

      Consumers Energy and DTE are customers of ours and they too have to hire off duty police officers to protect their vehicles and personnel when doing work in Detroit.  When their personnel are up on the ladders working the lines their vehicles are being stolen right out from underneath them.  

      The police do not even bother with the complaints because they are too busy with other more serious crimes.  A GPS unit geared for surveying runs $25K per unit.  Pretty expensive to do business in Detroit.
