Bottom line is that people are looking as hard at the candidates as has been in decades.

Part of my own recent experiences also includes getting agreement from folks who are long time family and friend acquaintances of my competition.  To do so, I have had to walk in the proverbial lions den from time to time.  It has paid off tremendously.

I also question your assertion that " it was a scheduling issue",  since the original invitation was sent out three weeks, prior to the event and by your own admission, Howard, and yourself, "did make inquiries to the event's organizers to try and assure impartiality, and after talking with them we were convinced we would be given a fair shake."

 I would suggest that it was not a "scheduling issue", but Howard's decision, not to attend, and that was certainly his right.  I only take issue with the fact, that he told me he would call me back with an answer, and he never did, even after I continued to send him followup emails and left a message on his voice mail, prior to the event.  

It is my opinion, that when someone running for public office, says they will do something and does not, the voters have the right to know!
