    Before 1854 there was no Republican Party. There was a collection of political parties both large and small supporting individual political causes and ideas. The political power lay in the hands of the Democrats especially because the South had more citizens even though slaves were only counted as 3/5 of a person. Still the power of the purse lay with the Democrats. The Whig party was powerless as more and more disaffected members left out of disgust. Soon members of other political parties began drifting away from one ineffective group after another. Contacts among those who opposed the political goings on in the country began and soon they began coalesce around a common idea.Freedom. In 1854 a convention was called to meet at Jackson Michigan. This was the begining of the Republican Party. Soon the party gained enough strength to nominate candidates for public and national office.John C. Fremont was the standard bearer in 1854 for President. Looking at the first election successes wouldn't have bouyed the hopes of those who had joined the fledgling effort. But politics is a strange creature. In just four short years the Republicans had effectively won the Presidency, won Governorships in many northern states and elected many candidates to Congress. If four short years.
    To those who claim that 3rd party's never succede I say this. The Republican party in it's humble beginnings was just one among many small parties in the middle of the 19th Century. It is still one of only two parties of national importance. If the Republicans do not find their way, their voice and understand the will of the people they will be relegated to the same status as the Whigs. We, the Conservative wing will give this party one last chance to come to Reagan and do what is right for America and her people. Failure now will have far reaching consequence. There is no doubt that nature fills a vacuum. But I do not beleive that a 3rd party always fails. Depending on need we have seen them succeed in the past and I beleive they can succeed again. If the Blue bloods and Country Club elites do not have the stomach for this fight then I can see a new party emerge today as the Republican party did a century and a half ago. It will be a party based in Conservative ideas with a reverance for the Constitution and the vision of the founders. With members dedicated to the nation and it's welfare rather then political expiedencey. If the Republicans fail to carry out the promises they make there will be a new party in this country. A Conservative party and it will succeed.
