Reagan started the War on Drugs. His "Drug Czar" violated the Constitution's Due Process Clause through Asset Forfeiture. Reagan's proposed spending (and Reagan signed the actual budgets into law) increased our national debt to what was then unprecedented levels. Then he raised taxes in 1986.
GHW Bush signed budgets into law that continued the spending, PLUS he raised taxes. He signed into law a number of ridiculous bills concerning the environment.
Somewhere in all this mess, the Americans with Disabilities Act was passed and signed into law. It escapes me which president did it, but it was either Bush 1, or the Republican Congress under Clinton. Either way, the GOP was complicit in it.
Under Clinton, the GOP controlled Congress held spending in check, for the most part, even creating a "surplus" (which was no surplus at all since most of the excessive spending was off-budget). They took credit for this so-called surplus, and have continued the lie about it right on through the present day (Ron Paul being the exception).
With a GOP controlled Congress, GW Bush created the Medicare Drug Prescription Program, No Child Left Behind. With a Democrat controlled Congress, Bush signed into law an increase in minimum wage, and TARP bailouts.
Since Reagan, Republicans have been promising to end the Dept of Education. Under Bush, its budget doubled in 8 years.
The biggest problem I have with Conservatism is its support of Prohibition (which creates crime and violence). In addition, it claims to be for free markets and small government, and yet under its watch, gov't spending has increased by something over 200%. In the past 2 years, it's increased even more (under progressive leadership). Either way, the spending grew.
Conservatives call for more federal spending to "stop the flow of illegal aliens," when free market researchers have shown again and again that immigrants, whether legal or illegal, add to the wealth of this nation. In spite of many illegals getting gov't handouts, the majority of illegals do not. In fact, per capita more Americans collect welfare and gov't entitlements than illegals do. But the Conservatives have not addressed that problem.
You want me to believe that "we are winning," but if I bring up something done by a conservative that's negative, you claim that they are RINOs. Show me the conservatives then...who is it?
Is it Buckley, who advocated for the end to the war on drugs? Sobran, Buchanan, and Paul, all of whom advocated for the end of the empire building through war?
Give me something here folks. Stop telling me to support the GOP while denouncing the majority of those who hold power - Lott, McCain, Snyder, Bush, Bush, et al.
Liberty and Free Markets are the answer. The GOP doesn't believe in either (except for a couple in Congress - Amash and Paul). I'm supposed to vote for the GOP because there are 2 freedom fighters in the party who hold public office?
Oh, I know: there are no libertarians who hold public office. No kidding. And why is that? Because conservatives keep voting for Republicans...and then bitch about them being RINOs.
