Less competition, higher prices, more people pushed into poverty, a more powerful bureaucracy, and increased taxes to support the swelling--all in one fell swoop.

      What's not to like?

It's not adequate these days that a corporate entity that abuses the public can be punished by the free market.  No, bureaucrats have to use these incidents to expand their own power.  The beauty of it all is that many of these corporations that produce shoddy or unsafe products are precisely the ones that are deemed too big to fail or possess lobbies large enough to sidestep the regulations while smaller companies are the ones that get hammered.

(Think lead in toy paint...Mattel gets to provide its on testing while small companies are being driven out of business by the costs of adhering to CPSIA regulations.)  So, while Mattel was perhaps the worst culprit in the importation of toys with high paint levels, it is its competitors that get driven under.
