The "Green Economy" logic (none / 0) (#4)
by thejmfc on Fri May 08, 2009 at 03:05:36 PM EST
ignores one glaring problem:  Michigan apparently can't remain competitive in the auto industry - an industry that started here, an industry that we effectively owned for a long time.  How do they expect a brand new industry to take off and thrive in the same state, with the same strong unions, with the same lousy business climate?  Labor is still cheaper in other states and other countries.  It's not as if we know how to make windmills and solar panels, and nobody else does.

In other words, incentives aside, Michigan has no advantage in attracting these industries.  If anything, they would be wise to stay away.  I don't know what length of time these tax incentives are for, but my bet is that if/when they go away, so does our new green industry.

I also find it convenient that the Governor is happy enough to sign onto tax incentives to lure in "cool" new industries, but refuses to remove the SBT Surcharge unless it's revenue is replaced.

      Is it 2010 yet?
