Defected from what?  There is no book or leader saying what the playbook should be, particularly on this issue.

It's not just that I disagree with your assessment. I think its fundamentally unfair to otherwise honest people and that it unnecessarily polarizes us on an issue that should roll off your back, and, that other than the smoking ban, presented the most complex issue and moral policy tradeoffs to choose from. It's a hard vote.  My appraisal of their motives is based on observation I may have repeated it often, and I do so only in the spirit I think is your own in criticizing them.

Every day average voters could care a frog's leap about this topic.  Their is one and only one issue - the economy and how to fix it.  Lots of things relate to that - and that doesn't mean the legislature shouldn't multi-task other issues when possible, but if you do that and it appears to distract from your time on the ball you'll pay for that at the polls.  This issue is inside baseball and has nothing to do with the Republican brand (that is, the positive image to the world we should project) -- it has to do with the Republican base, which I agree we also need to reassure, but they're on board too if we fix Michigan and the nation.
