My favorite piece of political writing was by Stephen Moore back in 1995.  He wrote an article in Policy Review called "The UnConstitution Congress," in which he laid out why most of the legislation passed by Congress today is unConstitutional.

There is a great quote by Andrew Jackson that shows even in his day Congress could not be trusted.  He said; "I weep for the liberty of my country when I see at this early day of its successful experiment that corruption has been imputed to many members of the House of Representatives, and the rights of the people have been bartered for promises of office."

Elected officials are corrupt by nature, however, we have the power to end their reign if we so chose.  The people of this country must get off the collective backsides and start voting smarter or we will soon be beholden to the UN and Congress for everything.
