And Nick, add to that list of superfluities the unneeded judgeships in some of the state's trial courts and possibly on the Court of Appeals. A tiral court judgeships costs the taxpayers about $157,000; a Court of Appeals judge accounts for about half a million dollars (judge's salary and benefits, staff's salary and benefits, etc.) Later this summer or early this fall, the State Court Administrative Office will issue (as it does every two years) a report on the state's need for judges -- where some judgeships should be eliminated (by attrition; nobody gets removed from the bench in mid-term or anything like that) and others created. The state Legislature unfortunately has a history of creating judgeships while not eliminating any, with predictable results for the state budget. Will the Legislature heed this year's report?
