    Welcome to Scoop!

To help you figure things out, there is a Scoop Admin Guide which can hopefully answer most of your questions.

    Some tips:

    • Most of the layout is changed in "Blocks", found in the admin tools menu
    • Features can be turned on and off, and configured, in "Site Controls" in the admin tools menu
    • Stories have an "edit" link right beside the "Full Story" link on an index page, and right beside the "Post a Comment" link on the full story page. They can also be edited by clicking the story title in the "Story List" admin tool
    • Boxes are what allow you to write new features for Scoop; they require a knowledge of the perl programming language to work with effectively, although you can often make small changes without knowing much perl. If you would like a feature added but cannot program it yourself, ScoopHost does custom Scoop programming as one of its services.
    • If you aren't sure where to look for a particular feature or piece of display, try the "Search Admin Tools" link in the admin tools menu.

    A Decision Must Be Made

Many of you have been regulars for years on RightMichigan.com.  There are reasons you come here.  For some, it might be to catch up on what is happening in the state politically, and perhaps even to get a conservative's view on the daily events affecting us in Michigan politics and social realm.  Nick De leeuw built a pretty good sounding board for conservatives across the state, and real policy and decisions have been made as a result of news and opinion made here.  And his writing up until a few months back was sought out by most who visited.  His reasoning pretty well considered, and he has generally demonstrated sound conservative principles.

Nick's opinion is a trusted one.  And I hope my own carries some weight as well.

We had both agreed early on, that three Republican candidates, Bouchard, Cox, and Hoekstra would be worthy candidates and would likely make great governors.  The primary had promise to produce at least one great result, and that result being a truly Republican governor for the state of Michigan.  To be sure, each candidate has weaknesses, either in policy or perhaps a personal area, but nothing that has not been overcome with either explanation, a recant, or apology.  "To err is human, to forgive, divine," and we move on.

As this is a primary, and only one of these fine gentlemen who represent Republican principles can be Governor at a time, RightMichigan.com writers and readers alike have done due diligence, and decided whom they will back.  Nick and I both looked at many different points of strength the candidates have.  Conservative values, commitment of service, ability to rally support, and overall electability in the general election.  On balance, we both came to the same conclusion, and have been supporters of Mike Cox in his bid to be Michigan's top executive.  Nick was serious enough to work for the Cox campaign directly.

    It comes at a cost.

A Message To Our Legislators - Beware False Choices

Many folks have been wondering why Rick Snyder won't openly debate the other Republican candidates for Governor.  Some say he does not yet want to be outed as the progressive shill he is.  Some say he is simply "trying to talk directly to the people" instead of participating in an establishment exercise.

    Believable?

Perhaps, as the there are enough potential true Republican Voters who are convinced enough to believe Rick Snyder is worthy of their support for the primary, much less an acknowledgment he is a Republican in the first place.  Something to take seriously when looking at a candidate who hopes to be the standard bearer of the Republican party of Michigan.  To be sure... the GOP can do far better than this RINO. (yeah.. I said it)

Am I being a little strong?

Rick Snyder was the first executive of the MEDC.  He was the pilot of the state of Michigan's voyage into taxpayer pockets with its corporate giveaway program.  These things don't happen by accident.  He does not get selected because he was standing around on a street corner whistling a pretty tune.  He lobbied for, and received the position of Chair of the MEDC at its inception.  Never mind whether it works, or whether the taxpayers even get a benefit out of it.  There is no question he knows the system quite well, because he BUILT IT.

But this isn't where it ends...  It only starts here.. For God's Sake.. please read on..

    Madison predicted current political affairs

Lets consider that when we elect our representation, we expect both adherence to rule of law, and to conservative principles that most who come here understand.  Countless arguments exist about big tents, relaxing standards, or tolerance to "new ideas" in the Republican party in Michigan and elsewhere.

Our founders were quite prescient however as seen by the words of Madison on the conformity to "Republican" Principles going forward. From The federalist papers No. 39.

"The first question that offers itself is, whether the general form and aspect of the government be strictly republican. It is evident that no other form would be reconcilable with the genius of the people of America; with the fundamental principles of the Revolution; or with that honorable determination which animates every votary of freedom, to rest all our political experiments on the capacity of mankind for self-government. If the plan of the convention, therefore, be found to depart from the republican character, its advocates must abandon it as no longer defensible."

Madison felt that Republican form of government served the people best, and to proceed with the convention sans IT being the premise of the new government, would be folly.  The premise of the new government was as a Republic.  The plan was to follow a set of limitations on government established by the constitution.  It was NOT a "democracy."

39 is also a discussion of how we would have a mix of "national" and Federal" types of powers.  But for this little peek into the past, lets pick off a small section..

Rick Snyder Dodges Pro-Life Question, But Says He's Pro-Life

A few weeks ago I pondered a very important conservative issue in this post: Is  MI GOP Gubernatorial candidate Rick Snyder a pro-abort? Not having so much as even met Rick Snyder yet, the indirect evidence was to say the least disturbing, albeit not 100% conclusive. Indirect evidence from that prior post:
    1. His adviser, pro-abort John Weaver, is to McCain what Rove was to Bush, and left the GOP for a time to be a Democrat adviser

    2. Weaver and his other adviser, John Yob, tend to only work for pro-abort 'moderates'

    3. Snyder gave money to John Dingell (D), who is a big pusher of ObamaCare that includes taxpayer funded abortions, on several occasions

    4. Snyder gave money to IMP-PAC,a group that can be boiled down to a single primary issue - abortion-on-demand in the GOP platform

I haven't gotten to ask Snyder about the abortion issue yet, but someone got to ask him a related question just the other day at a Rick Snyder townhall in Ann Arbor. The results unfortunately are mixed. From AnnArbor.com: Gubernatorial candidate Rick Snyder tells Ann Arbor crowd Michigan  needs a nerd. I'll just cut to the chase on the pro-life issue:

Conservative principles are simple - limited government, low taxes, personal freedom and liberty. The latter is not possible without your life. Our Founding Fathers, in their wisdom, listed life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness as our unalienable rights in the Declaration of Independence. It is interesting that the list is in the exact order it should be in since you cannot pursue happiness without liberty, and surely can't have liberty without life. Liberals have turned that on its head by stealing our liberty piece by piece by way of an ever-expanding government that is on an unending campaign to put every citizen under its thumb through government dependency. Even worst, the first unalienable right - life - is no more. At least not for babies. Or the infirm. Or seniors. But every bleeding-hearted liberal is against capital punishment for murderers. Be that as it may, conservative principles have been the mainstay of the Republican party. That is, until 'moderates' came onto the scene. These are people that call themselves Republicans, but don't stand on conservative principles. It is hard in fact to figure out what foundation they do stand on.

Thus enter Rick Snyder, one of several GOP gubernatorial candidates this year. I have at least met most of the other candidates with the exception of Snyder. A year ago, I couldn't have told you who the man was, but he has launched a campaign that included a SuperBowl campaign ad. The theme? Michigan needs a nerd:

The fact that he didn't identify himself as a Republican in the ad was a bit bothersome. So I had to ask - what does a nerd believe?

Macomb Community College Pres Jim Jacobs: Macomb's jobless rate will hit 20%

    From the Macomb Daily:
"It'll never be the same. That's a given. This (bankruptcy) makes the climb even steeper to ... get out of this local depression," said Jacobs, who has delivered the annual economic forecast for Macomb County for 25 consecutive years.

The former longtime professor's prediction was based on jobless rates in the county that exceeded expectations even before Chrysler and General Motors filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

The Macomb County unemployment rate fell from 15.0 percent in March to 14.4 percent in April. But analysts say the decline was due to a large number of jobless people who stopped looking for work.

Yikes! That's about as bad as it can get, no? So bad that people are just giving up on finding jobs? That's no way to get the unemployment number down. Not that's it's that down and not that it's that low either. Further:
