The GOP has done no such thing as sign a suicide pact with those folks.  Way too much media indoctrination has happened and a few folks might believe that is the case.

This is not an argument of overt religiosity, but rather an explanation of WHY it makes sense to at least recognize a supreme being.

While I get that you think it is a distraction, it is an argument that is either going to be fought or lost.  What method did Stalin use to promote worship of the state?

    I'll give you a clue.

"Stalin followed the position adopted by Lenin that religion was an opiate that needed to be removed in order to construct the ideal communist society."

You don't think we need God against that?

Hardly a distraction.  A reality, and it needs to be acknowledged as such.

    So we disagree.

    God given rights (none / 0) (#5)
by Rougman on Thu Sep 01, 2011 at 01:56:36 PM EST
I'm sorry, but I don't think recognizing that we receive our rights from something transcendent of government is somehow akin to believing that dinosaurs and man walked Earth together.

It is the foundation for our individual rights and liberty.

In some ways I share your frustration with many on the religious right.  Take Bart Stupak...how many people voted for that dope merely because he was endorsed by Right to Life?  Still, I think protecting our individual rights and recognizing the historical context behind how we were granted them is important.  Without a creator, however he is defined personally by disparate Americans, we would just get our rights from government.  I don't like that idea one bit.

As for banning...(not that I have the power to ban anyone)...no way! Your larger point needs to be recognized.

    Evidence? (none / 0) (#7)
by Conservative First on Thu Sep 01, 2011 at 07:00:28 PM EST
Don't confuse what you believe with what the majority of voters believe.

This has been studied a lot, and social conservatism is consistently more popular than fiscal conservatism.  You may not care about social issues, but lots of people do.

The abortion issue benefits Republicans because more people base their votes on being pro-life than being pro-abortion.  People have voted for the traditional definition of marriage every time it has been on the ballot.

It is quite possible that social conservatism helps to elect fiscal conservatives who wouldn't otherwise win.  Practically every strong fiscal conservative in Congress is also a social conservative, but not conversely.

...matter of fact, the old dead commie loves you.

    E. Both Capitalism and Judaeo-Christian culture must be destroyed before a Communist revolution can succeed
......1. Religious sentiment cannot be destroyed through legislation, as Lenin believed, but must be redirected from the divine to the state
.........a. Terror will only drive Religion underground
.........b. Religion will then reemerge when Leninism fails
.........c. So Religion must be destroyed in the minds of men
......2. Infiltrate religious academies and become priests and clergymen
.........a. Subtly promote heresy within religious organizations
.........b. Infiltrators must act so as to discredit the church
............(1) Cause financial and sexual scandals
............(2) See that this is given a high profile in the news
............(3) Like-minded infiltrators in the media will cooperate
......3. Once religion is discredited from within, continuously promote the idea that only the state can solve the problems that have been traditionally brought before the church
