    Re: Term Limits (none / 0) (#6)
by J Baranowski on Tue Dec 22, 2009 at 09:28:08 AM EST
I was once an ardent supporter of term limits. I had a number of people challenge me on my position after writing a piece for my local newspaper. After about three months of research (and a lot of contemplation,) I reversed my opinion. You can read a simplified version of my reasoning HERE. I can completely understand the appeal of term limits, especially given the current state of politics. But if you do additional research, you might find yourself wavering on the issue.

who would say this applies to state elected positions only not Federal. I have never heard of an instance were a member of Congress was recalled successfully or where an attempt was made. It would be contested in the Federal Courts that would be a given.
My contention is that if it is included in an amendment to the US Constitution there can be no doubt about the intent. Along with term limits it puts the leash back on the dogs that have been running loose to long. Another thought is the repeal of the 17th Amendment as well. It would give states more power and representation in the Senate. Instead of having hacks such as Stabs-us-now and Lenin serving their party rather then the people of Michigan they could be recalled by the Governor or the Legislature for failure to carry out the wishes and best interests of the state. It also makes the state governments more important and increases their options under the 10th Amendment to the US Constitution.
