The contraction of auto jobs in Michigan and throughout the industry as a whole can be traced to advent of the first CAFE standards in 1973 if I remember the year correctly. Once the CAFE standards went into effect Michigan began to lose jobs. The first twenty years of the CAFE standards saw Michigan lose three hundred thousand jobs. One reason many of these jobs were lost is the misconception by auto industry execs that the Japanese were building better cars by the use of robots. This sounds simplistic but indeed happened. Once the robotics and automation programs began to be undertaken in American factories management saw the benifit. Robots don't call in or get sick. The use of robots to perform simplistic and mundane tasks has become very common in most of the industries that make cars or supply the automakers. It also allowed the companies to do more with less human workers. Many other lost jobs were because the big three began to put more responsibility on the suppliers. Where they used to keep 90 days of parts on hand they now keep a few hours of parts in house. Deliveries are made at least twice a shift to conserve floor space and to aleiviat storage. Once they put a price on a square foot of warehouse space that started the ball rolling.
Also because of several levels of part containment and inspection within the suppliers facilities fewer inspectors and qualitiy assuance people were needed in the car assembly plants. There have been many reasons for the loss of jobs in the industry but the bottom line was to contain manufacturing costs by using robots, automation and modern manufacturering methods to reduce the number of workers needed to get the same amount of productivity. The automakers have contracted in accordance with increased environmental and safety standards imposed by Liberal Democrat Congress's throughout the last four decades.
