I agree that no political office holder is beyond suspicion . . . period.  (Yes, that includes Justin Amash.)  These days it's about the balance between "benefit of the doubt" and "trust but verify" . . . a balance point which will vary with each elected official in question.

However, I happen to know Ruth personally, and well enough that I'll give her a bit of rope on this.  (Should she choose to hang herself with that rope, well, that's on her.)
