      Defense from a mob with a gun would be the equivalent of using the gun.  You had no reasonable reason to injure the guy and "taking care of this jackass" (which he was).  He smacked your camera - but that's all he did.  That could've gotten him charged with assault, but if you "smashed his face" or "put this douchebag in his place", you probably couln't use the self defense argument.  And if you then drew your gun, any concealed carry class would tell you that you only draw your gun if you're prepared to use it.  You admit that if you had your gun, you would have considered drawing it.

      There was no good self defense case here, and if you ended up punching the guy, you'd end up both (rightfully) going to jail.
