To expound on the Charter school thing a little... the survival of cancer doesn't automatically enroll you into a specially protected victim class.  Obey the rules you agree to or go somewhere else.  It's prolly a good thing that I'm not the principle at that Charter school 'cause the student and his mother would already be packing their stuff up and heading back to whatever public school would accept them.
