Okay, boys and girls let's jump into the DMC-12 for a short history lesson on mass transit in Detroit.

Detroit HAD a light rail system. It began in the late 1800's. It was taken over by city government in the early 20's. Promptly ran into the ground and closed in the mid-50's.

Detroit has two transit systems: D-DOT & SMART.

Both are accurately referred to as "mugger movers" for good reason: crime follows established bus lines.

Both have consistently faced management problems which requires taxes to be coerced by local government to sustain their business model.

Both have their share of poor service.

And both are cutting back what little they do offer due to lack of revenue.
