. . . my "rounds by telephone" of state representatives with whom I have some pull, I can say that we have 9 republicans and 3 democrats who either will be voting "no" or will be easy to persuade in that direction. Additionally, I have started with 8 state senators as the beginning of a "firewall" backup plan approach.

Also, get in the ear of the members of the Permanent Committee on Redistricting and Elections. This is where the bill should go first once its been read in.

Right now, so far as I'm aware, those pushing the NPVIC are just trying to round up co-sponsors to support Matt Lori.  This is because, under Michigan's legislative rules, once a bill has been introduced (and numbered) the sponsorship cannot be changed until it comes to the floor for a full vote.

If we can cut them off at the pass in THESE NEXT FEW DAYS and get most of the House members to tell these guys, "Go away and leave me alone on this one," and also build a preemptive firewall in the Senate, then that will be a major nip-it-in-the-bud win.  If the bill ever gets out of committee, it will be pretty weak with just a couple of co-sponsors and a bi-partisan majority ready to render it D.O.A.
