    Opportunity (none / 0) (#15)

I've seen a few news articles in which Democrats flame Republicans for "wanting to waste the taxpayer's money" on holding a primary election, since they are not going to have one in 2012. I can also readily anticipate Romney winning a Michigan presidential primary open to all. This seems like a rare serendipitous opportunity to kill several birds at once. Either a caucus, which only the more motivated (and probably conservative) participants would be likely to attend, or a closed primary (in which voters would have to be at least token Republicans) would appear to improve the prospects of getting an actual conservative on the ballot. It seems reasonable that once in place in 2012, it would be easier to maintain the same system for the next gubernatorial nomination- inertia, public acceptance of status quo, and all that. When will there ever be another opportunity like this?

Having a secondary runoff election would be nice (especially in 2010 hindsight), but the extra cost just two weeks later seems like a killer these days. Public election fatigue would probably have a negative effect too. What are the arguments for sticking with an open primary? I can't think of any.
