You also get justices like Scalia and Roberts through the appointment process. The problem with electing justices is that you wind up with a more heavily politicized judiciary, meaning that Justices are more likely to allow outside interests to influence their rulings because our Justices need their help to retain their spot on the court when they face an election campaign. This applies to both the Republicans and Democrats on the court.

I am a firm believer in the necessity of an independent judiciary. I also believe that we should place the best qualified Justices on our Supreme Court, rather than those who work to gain the approval of one party or the other. While appointing Justices may well not be able to fully accomplish this, it will be a vast improvement over our current system. And if we want to give citizens a voice on our courts, then we could also give voters the ability to recall Justices either at regular intervals or through a petition.

Also, just so you know where I'm coming from, I'm a political moderate and I generally support measures that reduces the power of both major parties. So I'm probably going to be somewhere to the left of most people here on most issues.
