    #1 happens when a company is successful enough that they can either buy out their competition or lower prices so that other companies cannot compete with them. This is not a bad thing in it of itself, but if a company does manage to achieve a true monopoly, then that company gains full control over its product. This isn't necessarily a terrible thing for all products (if Sony achieved a monopoly on game consoles, I wouldn't cry about it or anything), but if a company successfully monopolized something like oil, or copper refining, or anything like that, the results could be very bad.

    Now, this is not to say that all antitrust legislation is a good thing. I agree that the various lawsuits against companies like Google and Microsoft are stupid because these companies haven't monopolized anything (or even come close). However, for cases like the lysine price-fixing scheme, antitrust law is necessary.
