    Today I am grieving like many thousands of my fellow Michigan residents and baseball fans. We have lost a true gentleman and a warm and wonderful human being. So many memories we have of Mr. Harwell. He gave us so many wonderful days and nights of baseball. And he did it with class and a love of the game and of the people to whom he spoke. The people of Michigan returned that love. They embraced a Georgia boy and held him with awe, respect and appreciation. He met the greats of the game, Ruth, DiMaggio,Mantle, Kaline, Cobb and so many others. At the same time he became a great part of the game himself, although his humble demeanor would not really accept that. Today I thank God for the life of Ernie Harwell. His beautiful voice is now stilled forever but the memories we have of him and his simple wonderful way will live with us for years to come. Thanks Ernie, thanks a million. God bless you and keep you and may he hold you in the hollow of his hand.
