Bruce - This road weight issue has been debated for years but there is so much union input into road construction and building that it just gets shouted down with the money that the unions pour into the politicians coffers.  The more money they get the more silence you hear on the subject. The general merchandise trucks like Meijer, Walmart, Roadway, etc hardly ever carry 80,000 lbs.  It is the gravel and stone haulers that do the most damage.  And in order to build roads you need gravel and stone.  Those contracts are bid by contractors that are union or have to pay Davis Bacon wages.  And believe me when they go across the scales at the pits it reads as close to 80,000 lbs as they can get.  I used to work for a stone hauler.
