Who are the NERD fund donors Mr Snyder?

    Raise the curtain.

    House Democrats (none / 0) (#10)

Took a laundry list of cuts from the HFA, put them up for a vote, and then attacked the Republicans as not supporting the "Republican Plan" as a nonsense gimmick to attack the GOP.

That goes in my book as "gamesmanship", "partisan", and "unrealistic."

It's just unfortunate that the GOP didn't come up with a plan, didn't attack the Dems for the tax increase, and basically laid on their backs screaming "don't hurt me!" for the past 2 years, so you guys got off scot free.  Make sure to shake a Republican's hand and thank them for your majority today.

    That's all well and good... (none / 0) (#11)

...but it's 2009 now and we've got a 2010 budget crisis five months before the fiscal year even has to be addressed.

There will always be excuses to avoid making tough calls.

    Always.

And half of them will usually make sense, too.

    Doesn't matter anymore.

The question is, how do we solve this crisis and the only answer is to right-size government, no matter how "painful" that will be.

The cuts are out there.  Time to make them.

    Right-sizing government (none / 0) (#12)
by Brady on Thu May 07, 2009 at 11:01:14 AM EST
Well, Michigan ranks 27th out of the 50 states in combined state and local tax burden and 27th out of the 50 states in per capita spending.  So while state government may not be the right size in various ways for different people, it certainly is of average size.

There's a real trade-off in taxes versus spending that is often ignored.  A point is reached as which the loss of programs and services becomes worse for growth than taxes.  Road funding in Michigan is an example.  The current state of Michigan's roads, for example, is as much or more of a disincentive to do business in Michigan than the state's gas tax.  Unless, of course, you're an auto repair shop.

There's a reason that the Chicago area continues to see business growth in a recession.  And I can guarantee you, it's not because of a low tax rate.

What Michigan could really improve on is it's tax structure.  We would be much better off dumping the MBT and personal property taxes and replacing them with something like Kevin's Fair Tax or a limited graduated income tax.

. . . did I just hear Brady say that the Michigan FairTax Proposal is a good idea?

Brady, which Dem do you work for, and does that person share your opinion?  (You don't have to put it out here in the open, Nick has my contact info.)
