The Link Between Porn and Aggressive Behavior (none / 0) (#12)
by Kevin Rex Heine on Thu Apr 09, 2009 at 01:52:19 PM EST
I actually drew the short straw in my Social Psychology class at Davenport and wound up being tasked to do a research paper on this very topic.  (Secondary research, not primary.)

Let me first make clear that the Social Psych definition of "aggressive behavior" (which carries over to both Sociology and Psychology) is "any behavior (whether by commission or omission, action or inaction, speech or silence) that is intended to injure another person who does not want to be injured."  Of course, this includes violence (with the exception being athletic violence within the rules of a given sport).

The fact of the matter is that, while there is a correlational link between pornography and aggressive behavior, there is no causal link.  In other words, porn isn't going to cause you to be violent, or otherwise aggressive, toward women unless you are already predisposed toward aggressive behavior in general.  (There is an exception in the case of "rape porn," but that is a whole different discussion.)

I grant that pornography is not much more than prostitution for the purpose of public entertainment, and as a practicing Christian I find it repulsive.  However, the argument that porn in general is a causal factor in violence against women is not necessarily supported by honest research.

      I don't believe in banning... (none / 0) (#13)
by Michigan Redneck on Thu Apr 09, 2009 at 04:44:47 PM EST
Please, don't get me wrong.  I don't think porn or cigarettes should be banned.  Nor do I believe that these things should be taxed.  I am of the old school thought that you are responsible for what you do.
It is up to parents and religious leaders to tell children when they are young that these and other things are bad for them, and explain why.
The thing that gets under my skin is the modern way the backlash against feminism is.  Society says that bimbo-ism is anti-feminist, so it must be good.  Parents and churches need to teach girls and young women that both feminism and bimbo-ism are not good. Actually, boys and young men should be taught this also.  In dating terms, men are never satisfied when dealing with either type of women.
