    Canada is actually ahead of the US in economic freedom according to Cato's Economic Freedom of the World Report. The top nation/city-states are listed below (score based on 1-10):

    1. Hong Kong 8.94
    2. Singapore 8.57
    3. New Zealand 8.28
    4. Switzerland 8.20
    5. United Kingdom 8.07
    6. Chile 8.06
    7. Canada 8.05
    8. Australia 8.04
    9. U.S. 8.04
    10. Ireland 7.92

    This data was for 2005 (which I am certain means that the U.S. is even lower today), and included in its weighing such things as: size of gov't (expenditures, taxes, and enterprises); legal structure and security of property rights; access to sound money; freedom to trade internationally; and regulation of credit, labor and business.

    It may not be music to our ears, and our response to this may stem more from an adherence to Rush Limbaugh than to actually economic facts, but I put a lot of weight behind the scholars at Cato. Sad to say, but this is probably quite accurate in its analysis.
