How is a new party going to get 35% of the vote? (none / 0) (#25)
by Republican Michigander on Tue Sep 04, 2012 at 07:52:35 PM EST
When I first voted, I usually split my ticket 1/3 GOP and 2/3 Libertarian party. Then I saw reality that at best the only thing third parties are are protest votes. On a few occasions I threw off a 3rd party vote because I was that pissed off. Rick Snyder in 2010 was one of those cases. I also knew Snyder was going to win. Roy Schmidt wouldn't get my vote either.

This is what nobody who talks about starting a new party can explain to me. How will this new party get enough votes to be a contender. Any new party would have to compete for enough seats to at least control the swing of a majority. That means likely at least 10-20 house seats and 5-10 senate seats in the state house. For the US House, at least 50 congresscritters and 5-10 senators.

How is that 3rd party going to get enough people to vote for them? How will they do what the Progressive Party, Populist Party, Bull Moose party, States Rights Party, George Wallace Party, Green Party, Libertarian Party, Reform Ross Perot Party, Socialist Party, Workers World Party, Natural Law Party, and Constitution/US Taxpayers Party have been unable to do?
