When this stupid ass and very expensive primary system didn't exist. The biggest reason for it is it takes twice to three times as much money as it needs to. That means the average man doesn't have access to the kind of funding it takes to run a national campaign. As someone who became politically aware at an early age I remember watching the 1960 conventions on TV. Yeah, black and white. In those days the conventions meant something. They had a purpose unlike today. Now, just the closing act on the political circus's and the dog and pony shows put on by both parties. They all bitch about money in politics but anybody that pays attention knows that money is the life blood of the political process. Still there are ways to make the process better. Return to the old ways of doing things. The convention process gave us better vetting and stronger candidates that better represented the platforms of the party. Not like today. I still don't understand the idea of having a primary or caucus in a state. Like with the baseball playoff system it is all about money. It is time to return sanity to the process of choosing a candidate. Reduce the cost of campaigns and start getting better candidates that will govern better. Call me old fashion. That is fine cause I am. But things needn't be this difficult. The current primary system is how we ended up with McAmnesty, Snydholm, Bob Dole and other half baked candidates that ran throw away campaigns or claimed to be one thing and proved to be another after winning. Maybe once we get contol of the nominating process we can once again gain control of spending and the unconstitutional expansion of government. We need to act now. Before it is too late.
