With regard to new advances (none / 0) (#19)

The photovoltaic principle has been around 171 years and windmills have been around forever. I'm not trying to be difficult but what big breakthrough are proponents of green energy expecting in the next 10-20 years that hasn't happed in the previous 171 years (in solar power's case)?

Major advances are already being made. Research into certain types of solar panels over the past 10 years or so has resulted in a panel efficient enough to be cost-effective in areas that do not receive very high levels of sunshine. Meanwhile, the relatively new concept of microturbines, which use small air currents and therefore do not require windy days to operate, is beginning to revolutionize the wind energy industry. These technologies are being developed today because they wouldn't be possible without more recent advances in materials and electronics.
