I have no opposition to the removal of frivolous and unnecessary barriers that prevent competition in the industry. That said, I still think that the industry needs to be regulated because otherwise the system would be ripe for abuses that will have a human toll. And I'm equally hesitant to trust the government's ability to responsibly deregulate the industry as I am for them to offer an alternative because such deregulation could easily be compromised by lobbyists for health care providers, who would support certain deregulation that would allow them to deny care in more situations. Meanwhile, a government-run health care option would be opposed by these interests, so their ability to derail it if it were implemented would be reduced. Of course, the government is more than capable of screwing up such an initiative on their own, as Obamacare demonstrates.

The bottom line is that the entire industry is a mess and there's no easy solution. My position is that I'd be willing to consider any solution that has a fair shot at working, even if it involves the government providing an option for public use (note: I inherently oppose any mandates). That said, Obamacare is not the answer because it is not a well-formed system as it relies on insanely optimistic assumptions on the economy to be fiscally viable, which is the opposite of helpful.
