    My reasoning (none / 0) (#11)

While it is not difficult to use 24 point boldface font when writing out the title of the party on an application, it is difficult for anyone to keep track of a large number of inane, pointless regulations when filling out an application. Putting in a large number of frivolous regulations into a process and then denying a constitutional right because one of these frivolous regulations wasn't followed to the letter is wrong.

Attempting to exercise the constitutional right of free speech by forming a political party should be simple. You should have to get enough signatures to get on the ballot and file with the SOS period. Making a bunch of useless regulations in the hopes of tripping up new parties that the SOS does not want on the ballot is tantamount to the state attempting to restrict our rights. I mean, seriously, if you changed this situation to a law where you could be cited for filing your taxes improperly because you typed in your name in 12 point font instead of 14 point font or couldn't get a gun license for a similar reason, then we would all be decrying overregulation and government obstructionism.

Finally, this also bothers me because if anyone else used the wrong font on their ballot, then they'd be certified anyway. I do not believe for a second that if a party backed by Republicans called itself the "Progressive Party" and used the wrong font size, that the SOS would throw away their application. Likewise, I doubt that a Democrat-controlled SOS would throw away the FTP's application. This whole thing reeks of political maneuvering without respect for any principals of law, which is a huge issue in Michigan. Both parties routinely try to win minor, short-term political victories at the expense of the principals they claim to follow.
