(the post at motorcitytimes.com has several links that you might want to check out)

This is a continuation of a previous blog post regarding Federalism and Michigan's next Governor. As outlined in the previous post, our state needs to implement a `bottom up' approach to solving many of our problems.

In the previous post, I outlined my thoughts on why a Federalist approach will be a a key component going forward in fixing many of our States problems. It's critical that Michigan's next governor push back hard against an ever encroaching Federal government bent on inflicting its liberal agenda on every corner of the nation and hampering our economic recovery.

One area where the federal government encroachment is becoming increasingly onerous is in the area of energy. With the federal government classifying the gas all of us exhale (carbon dioxide) a dangerous pollutant; we have a long tough fight on our hands.

If Michigan is to reemerge as a successful state;  reliable, inexpensive energy is going to be a key element in our economic recovery.

    Alternate Energy Requires Huge Subsidies

One of the single most absurd "silver bullet" solutions to our economic problems is Jennifer Granholm's "45 by 20" plan. This plan requires the state to reduce our reliance on `fossil' fuels by 45% by 2020 and replace that energy with wind and solar power.

I don't want to spend too much time detailing the technical shortcoming of Solar and Wind Power and think the facts speak for themselves. Windmills have been around for hundreds of years and the photovoltaic principle (the chemical reaction that converts sunlight to electricity) has been around for 170 years. Even with free wind and sunlight, both methods for generating electricity are extremely expensive (due to the very low generating capacity) and require huge government subsidies.

    Real power

Low cost, reliable electrical power is one of the fundamental pillars of our economy. Even in retail situations, the cost of the stores electrical power is included in the price of purchased goods.  If Granholm's plan ever comes to fruition, electric prices will skyrocket negatively impacting the economy.

World leaders will converge in Copenhagen for the `climate change' or `global warming' summit in a few weeks. At the summit world leaders will pose for photo-ops and make grandiose pledges to stop climate change in public.

Back home it's a different story. For example, Germany's Angela Merkel, a big climate change activist, is supporting the construction of 26 new coal fired power plants to burn inexpensive Eastern European coal in an effort to protect Germany's  economy. Germany is not alone, many other countries are doing the same.

Michigan needs to follow the example of world leaders like Germany's Merkel and construct new coal and nuclear power plants to create real jobs, drive down electric power costs and revive our economy.

This action alone will send a strong message that Michigan is serious about business.

However this will not be easy.

    The Push Back

It's well known that Democrats in Washington and Lansing are beholden to the environmentalists and will oppose any discussion of building new, efficient coal fired or nuclear power plants to meet the future demands of our state.

To counter the opposition from Democrats in Washington, our next governor will have to stand up and make the opponents to the new power plants publicly state that they oppose economic progress and the jobs that come with it.

Imagine an Obama official holding a press conference saying that Obama opposes Michigan creating jobs and improving our economy because it will contribute to global warming.

That will be a tough sell since the State of Michigan has cooled over the last 35 years.
