And So It Begins

Taking no chances that the grassroots come out in opposition, the Progressives strike.

The Michigan State Senate nearly doubles our state gasoline taxes.

Voting to raise the gas taxes by 17 cents at legislative maturity, RINO Senate Leader and tax raiser Randy Richardville’s bill will create even more hardships on those who are already struggling to put fuel in the tank.  Much of it earmarked for mass transit too?  Wonderful.  The Ivory Tower reports:

The bill from Senate Majority Leader Randy Richardville, R-Monroe, was passed quickly and without debate, by a 23-14 vote, after a number of false starts earlier in the day.

The Senate took “a big step to show people we’re serious,” Richardville said. “If you’ve got an alternative, we’re going to take a look at it.”

I'd love to know if they happen to have any audio/video of this comment.

Kind of like Obama's cabana boy Gruber.

Why would one require audio/video for validation? To talk about jump shots?

Because it would be the swan song for Snyder's gas tax if it was recorded and gone viral like...

Swan song? Oh please, the elections are over, and the new Senate leadership has spoken (Meekhof & Kowall), and now the next chosen ones in the House soon seal yet another "Grand" BOHICA.

              Yeah, the elections are over.

But do you mean to tell me that there wouldn't be any backlash against Richardville if every TV & Radio station played a clip of him taunting reporters about the tax he just raised?

I haven't heard very many people locally come out and support this new tax on any of the local stations.

It's a safe bet that those same people would be a little more "engaged" because of the senators arrogance.

Because we've seen Gadsdens flooding Lansing, over the State Income Tax hike? Medicaid expansion? The non-bailout Detroit Bailout A/K/A DIA Bailout? Doubling Tipping Fees (garbage collection tax for the mouthbreathers)?

With an alleged Republican executive branch?

                Do tell.

Scales has a point here, K.G. While the gadsden-wavers were out in force during the last two years of Governor Grandstander's tenure, they were few and far between once the NerdKing was in the office. Sure, there were noteworthy protests (and counter-protests, in the case of FTW) on some of the higher-profile votes; but those protests were generally limited in scope compared to the tea-fueled rallies of 2009-2010.

In fact, one of the puzzling paradoxes that I encountered while working the Proposal 5 campaign back in 2012 was that I found myself being vigorously and vehemently opposed by tea party leadership that insisted on spewing the official meme that said proposal would "allow a super-minority of 13 senators to block any legislation" (and never mind that said super-minority would be so only on legislation that included any form of tax or fee increase), among the various red herrings employed.

Said tea types haven't had much to say to me since I dared to point out the most likely reason for this change of attitude, and given this little lame-duck development, my first question to them would be: So how's that "No on 5" working out for you these days?

As I've observed before, most of the the constitutionalist insurgents in this state have of late developed a bad habit of not being able to completely think through much of anything of consequence. Those of us who saw this coming two years ago will be quite justified in responding to any tea-fueled complaining with a big fat, "We told you so."

It occurs to me that the Part-Time Legislature Initiative, had it made it to the ballot and been ratified, would have put a stop to this foolishness (primarily through outlawing the "lame duck" sessions).

According to the Detroit News account today, Patrick Colbeck voted against. He rightly pointed out that there are other ways to do it without taxes.

    Next up?

This is despicable showing that the RINO's are so out-of-touch with We the People. I note that local road initiatives at the county, city and township levels passed all over the state. I wonder if those voting folks were aware that their taxes just tripled. And, when the feds get to the carbon tax, only then do you realize just how you've been screwed. This has a rolling boulder effect in that now the road contractors will have to bill us the tax payers for their extra 17 cents a gallon, they'll be paying to reconstruct roads that should have been built properly in the first place. Isn't it just swell that the sitting-duck legislature just goosed us.

Something a little stronger than "goosed" would accurately describe the situation.

Although, being a family-friendly site, that kind of limits the options.

Ya, that *family-friendly* bleat... as far as I know, 18 is age of majority, which is what votes. If one cannot handle adult language from time to time, then perhaps they should stay vegetative flowers cocooned in their little hot houses. The pious schtick hasn't worked yet.
